How to Build n8n Workflows with Claude (n8n MCP Server Guide)
Claude can now create, edit and test n8n workflows for you through MCP. Here's how the connection works, what Claude does well, where it still needs you, and how to get a working automation in under an hour.
One of the biggest automation trends right now is simple to describe: you tell Claude what you want, and Claude builds the n8n workflow. No dragging nodes around, no guessing which setting is wrong. It works because of MCP (Model Context Protocol), which lets an AI assistant use real tools, in this case your n8n instance.
We build our own workflows this way every day, so this guide is practical: how it works, what to watch out for, and how to start.
What is the n8n MCP server?
MCP is an open standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude call tools safely. n8n offers an MCP server for your instance. Once Claude is connected, it can:
- search your existing workflows and read how they're built,
- create a new workflow from your description,
- edit nodes, settings and connections,
- test-run a workflow and read the results,
- fix errors it finds in an execution.
You stay in your normal n8n editor. Claude just does the clicking and configuration for you.
How to connect Claude to n8n (overview)
The exact steps change between versions, so always follow n8n's current documentation. The general flow is:
- Turn on MCP access in your n8n instance settings (a recent n8n version is required).
- Add n8n as an MCP server in your Claude app or in Claude Code.
- Authorise the connection (usually an OAuth login to your n8n).
- Ask Claude something simple to test, like "list my n8n workflows".
There are also community MCP servers that talk to the n8n API. The built-in one is the simplest place to start.
What to ask Claude (prompts that work)
Be specific about the trigger, the tools and the result:
"Build an n8n workflow: when a Typeform is submitted, clean the phone number, check Google Sheet 'Leads' for duplicates by phone, score the lead Hot/Warm/Cold with OpenAI, append it to the sheet and send me a Telegram message."
Good prompts mention:
- what starts the workflow (form, schedule, WhatsApp message, webhook),
- which accounts to use (your existing credentials by name),
- what "done" looks like (a row in a sheet, a message, a reply).
Where Claude still needs you
Claude is fast, but it isn't magic. In our experience:
- Credentials are yours. Claude can select credentials you already created, but you add API keys and logins yourself.
- Review before activating. Read every AI prompt and every message the workflow sends to customers.
- Test with real data. Ask Claude to run it with a sample, then check the output node by node.
- Complex error handling sometimes needs a second pass. Ask Claude to "add an error alert to Telegram".
The fastest way to start: give Claude a tested workflow
Building from scratch takes trial and error. Starting from a tested workflow is much faster. Every chapter of our n8n ebooks explains one real workflow node by node, with the ready-to-import JSON. Give Claude the JSON and the chapter, and ask it to set it up in your n8n with your accounts.
In practice that takes about 30–45 minutes, compared with about 2 hours importing it yourself or a day building it by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Can Claude really build n8n workflows by itself?
Yes. Connected through MCP, Claude can create and edit workflows in your instance and run tests. You still review the result, add credentials and decide when to activate it.
Do I need Claude Code, or does the Claude app work?
Both can connect to MCP servers. Claude Code is handy if you also want it to work with files, such as importing JSON or editing prompts, but the chat app works for building and editing.
Is it safe to give Claude access to my n8n?
You authorise the connection, and you can limit which workflows are exposed. Start on a test instance or test workflows, review changes before activating, and never share API keys in chat.
Does this work on self-hosted n8n?
Yes, as long as your n8n version supports MCP access and Claude can reach your instance.
